I went to this movie solely for Jack Black, and that's pretty much all I really enjoyed.

This is the story of a kid desperate to get away from his hometown and go to Stanford University because his family is nuts, his idol teaches there and he feels compelled to expand his horizons as an aspiring writer. Then he realizes he actually likes his nutty family and his girlfriend and stays home because of this.

This film tries to feint towards being an intelligent comedy, but it's not, really. It's all a bit silly, and the big moral lesson we learn - that staying home is what he needs to do because he loves his family and, really, what everyone should do if they love their family - is absurd. You can realize you love your family AND still venture off on your own to see what's out there for you. Maybe you love your girlfriend, but she's not planning to give up her dreams to follow YOU around, so why should you tailor your aspirations around her? Take off for a while, see how you handle being apart, learn new things, find some new experiences, explore who you are. Hot damn, summer in the city. Making your central character a wannabe author does not automatically make the film any more intellectual. Neither does a Kevin Kline cameo.

So it's kinda stupid. What's great, though, as always, is the lovely and talented Jack Black. He spends a lot of time in his underpants, but that's not even what's funny about him. He's JACK BLACK. HE's a walking comedy bomb. He awkwardly tries to seduce his way out of being caught red-handed breaking and entering, and it WORKS. THAT RULES.
