I think Adam Sandler is hilarious. I remember watching him on MTV's Remote Control as guys like Studboy and thinking he was insane but funny. "Memory Lane" - a track on one of his comedy albums - is one of the funniest things ever recorded. I thought "Billy Madison" was great and "The Wedding Singer" was made excellent by the appearance of Billy Idol.

That in mind, I was a bit disappointed by "The Waterboy." Not quite the blisteringly funny comedy it could be, it does pack some laughs - just not enough. There are some dry spells - some of which are adequately filled by just plain weird things that are amusing just because they don't make any sense, others that are just a bit slow and uninteresting.

Adam Sandler is Bobby, a simple-minded man that is perfectly content to be a waterboy for a championship football team, and he excels at the only thing he does. He is mocked incessantly and then fired, so he seeks out the coach of the losingest Louisiana college football team (Henry Winkler) and finds employment there. After being mocked once again, Bobby snaps and discovers he's got a talent for brutal tackling. A star is born, but Bobby's mama (Kathy Bates) doesn't like football, so he's got to keep it a secret. Throw in Fairuza Balk as a sweet girl with a criminal bent, a heartily abused Col. Sanders look-alike professor and some disturbing fans and you've got yourself a movie.

Although the film doesn't try to be any more than it is, it still seems not quite done. It IS funny and I enjoyed it... it just wasn't quite as funny as it COULD have been. It isn't much of a problem, though. Walk into an Adam Sandler film, sit back and just laugh. That's all you can do. I think that's all he wants you to do. Have a good time. That's what movies like this are for.
