SUNDANCE REVIEW (which means I'm doing a lot of reviews in a hurry, so they might be shorter and less fantastical):

I saw Eddie Griffin's new standup flick (or most of it) that was partially an autobiographical film, too. I have an affinity for stand-up comedy and I study it a lot. While I dug Undercover Brother and there was a flair or two of an interesting take on things, the bottom line is that at the end of the show, he did a standard hack sort of bit - "What if Sammy Davis Jr. worked at McDonald's?" That just depressed me, and I was already a bit depressed by his silly bit on homosexuality and a handful of other old bits sprinkled in. So I wasn't that impressed by it.

I'm starting to think we're never going to hear enough pussy-eating jokes. Don't get me wrong, of course - explicit sexual humor can be amusing, and I'm one of the unfortunate few (or one) who actually learned that women could have orgasms by watching "Eddie Murphy: Raw" at a tender age, but not everyone can be Eddie Murphy. By the way, just because he made all those "faggot-ass faggot" jokes in the early 80s doesn't mean you can do the same kinda shit and just preface it with "I got nothin' against homosexuals, but..." Grow the fuck up.

Not that he goes whole hog on the "fag" train, but there's enough there to be annoying. It's frustrating, though, because there's all this buildup about how Eddie was "always a bright kid," but then every time he heads for some intelligent shit, there's always a quick swerve into some dumb shit.

Oh, and I chuckled maybe seven times, and a few of those were the kind of resigned laughs that make you get mad at yourself for even cracking a smile - often at some weird thing that might not have been intended as funny.
